NUJ Chairman: Journalists Shy Away from Reporting Poor Remuneration, Welfare Package to Secretariat

The Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, Mr. Emmanuel Ogbechie, has accused his fellow colleagues of shying away from reporting their poor welfare and salary packages to the Secretariat.

The NUJ, boss in an interview with EXRAORDINAIREPEOPLE.COM, did not however substantiate why journalists tow the path of not reporting their deplorable working condition to the Secretariat

Asked on the poor remuneration and lack of adequate welfare package by publishers? he said: “That is the reason why we keep pushing for a media salary scale with the National Assembly (NASS).”

We, the Exco, believe that there must be a law in place for you to properly regulate that administrative aspect of media practice and journalism in Nigeria.

However, he said the Council encourages members to always report issues that infringe on their labour rights to NUJ, adding that few successes have been recorded though.

Ogbechie said: “The issue is that most of our colleagues shy away from reporting what the issues are and until we get concrete reports from our members we cannot act on issues that are basically rumours. So we encourage our members practicing journalism to always inform the NUJ of issues.

“Not too long ago, a newspaper here in Abuja had to cough N1 million to one of our colleagues because we insisted that the journalist must be paid his dues.

“We encourage our members to stand up for their rights. We cannot be preaching for the rights of others why that of NUJ members are left unattended to.”

…Pls, read the remaining part of the interview on code of ethics for journalists that would soon be unveiled, the much talked about media salary scale before the National Assembly, among other exciting disclosure made by the Chairman in the hardcopy edition.
