UNDP’s PROJECT ON POLICE REFORM ALIGNS WITH Ministry’s OBJECTIVES-GAIDAM

..Says $16m spent to built in N/E

The Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam has reiterated that the UNDP’s project on police reform aligns perfectly with the objectives of the Ministry, and they are determined to work hand in hand with the United Nations (UN) to achieve shared goals.

He stated this during a courtesy visit by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) team led by the Resident Representative, Mr. Muhammed Yahaya, to the Headquarters of the Ministry in Abuja.

The Minister pointed out that the UNDP’s project on police reform is a significant initiative and the federal government is committed to promoting effective and accountable policing practices that uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of our citizens.

In his words, “The UNDP’s support in this endeavor hasbeen instrumental, and we are grateful for the technical expertise and resources that have been extended to us.

The visit of the UNDP team has provided us with valuable insights into the work that has been accomplished so far.”

He said it is encouraging to witness the progress made in enhancing the capabilities of our police force,fostering community engagement, and improving the overall professionalism of our law enforcement agencies.

According to him, “It is indeed a privilege to serve in this capacity and work towards the noble goal of ensuring the safety and security of our citizens. Undoubtedly, there is still much work to be done.

We are fully aware of the challenges that lie ahead, and we acknowledge the complexities associated with police reform.

However, we are resolute in our commitment to bring about lasting change.

The Minister stressed.Gaidam stated that the prospects for strengthening working relationships with the United Nations Development Programme are indeed promising adding that collaboration, coordination, and mutual respect will be the cornerstones of the partnership, as they strive to create a safer and more secure environment for all.

 The Minister added that the expertise and guidance provided by the organization are invaluable assets that will undoubtedly contribute to the success of overcoming the obstacles that stand in the way and creating a police force that embodies the highest standards of professionalism,integrity, and respect for human rights.

Earlier, the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Mohammed Yahaya stated that they were pleased by the commitment of the Minister and the Nigerian Government towards police reform adding that UNDP remains committed to supporting this effort through partnership with the German Foreign Office.

In his words: “This partnership with the Ministry of Police Affairs is a significant stride towards elevating policing standards,supporting greater accountability, and fostering deeper collaboration for effective policing”.

He said UNDP has expended $16 million over four years to build nine police barracks in the North East states which were fully equipped, rehabilitation of training centre in Jos, and training 400trainers to train about 20,000 trainees in the Nigeria Police Force.
