The Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS), at its Annual General Meeting held on January 25, in Lagos has appointed Prof. Abubakar Sani Sambo FAS, as the new President-elect.
Sambo, who is the immediate past Vice-President of the Academy, is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering. He will take over as President of the Academy from Professor Ekanem Braide in January 2025.
The Executive Secretary of the Academy, Dr. Oladoyin Odubanjo, in a statement, said Sambo, is a former Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Chair of the Nigerian Member Committee of the World Energy Council, Africa Region, and former Vice Chancellor of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University and is currently the Chairman of the Ministerial Task Force on Power serving as advisory team on policies and innovative technologies.
Prof. Friday Okonofua FAS (Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology) is the new Vice-President of the Nigerian Academy of Science. He took over from Sambo at the recently held Annual General Meeting.
Okonofua, who is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology as well as a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo. He is the immediate past Chairman of the, Publications Committee of the Academy.
The Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS) was established in 1977. The Academy is the foremost independent scientific body in Nigeria dedicated to the development and advancement of science, technology, and innovation in Nigeria and brings scientific knowledge to positively guide policies/strategic direction of the country.
