OKONJO-IWEALA COMMENDS RMRDC DG, IKE-MUONSO FOR UPSCALING THE UTILIZATION OF NIGERIA’s RAW MATERIALS

The Director-General (DG) of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has commended the Director General (DG)/CEO, Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), Prof. Nnanyelugo Martin Ike-Muonso, for organizing a groundbreaking programme on innovative path to enhancing the country’s raw materials utilization.

The DG praised the initiative, highlighting the importance of platforms that foster collaboration between policymakers, researchers, and private sector stakeholders.

“I would like to commend your efforts to promote dialogue on improved utilization of Nigeria’s raw materials for sustainable industrial growth.

“Nigeria would benefit by processing its wealth of raw materials locally and exporting finished goods. This is part of our re-globalization drive at the WTO and will help Nigeria’s further integration into global supply chains and facilitate sustainable development.” she stated.

The event, which held in Abuja, focused on enhancing Nigeria’s industrial development and global trade competitiveness through local raw materials sourcing and strategic partnerships.

The dialogue event featured presentations on key programmes developed by the Council to support local industries and manufacturers in accessing locally sourced materials.

Panel discussions also explored ways to reduce dependency on imports, strengthen Nigeria’s supply chain resilience, and position the country as a hub for regional trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

At the well attended event, Ike-Muonso, emphasized the Council’s commitment to fostering industrial development.

He informed that the Council’s mission is to support the private sector with the tools and knowledge necessary to leverage local resources for sustainable production.

He observed that the maiden event represents an essential step in the strategy to improve Nigeria’s industrial outlook.

Okonjo-Iweala, in an acknowledgement which was made available to the media expressed optimism and look forward to WTO collaborating with RMRDC in the future.

The successful dialogue signposts Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable growth through local innovation and international cooperation.
