The United Nations (UN) has declared 2025 the international year of glaciers’ preservation.
Towards this end, the global body through the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) is ramping up efforts to heighten awareness of the importance of glaciers to global economy as many events and activities, starting already next week: 16 January 2025, 13:00-15:00 CET have been lined up.
Communications Assistant, Seconded Expert, Regional Office for NCWA World Meteorological Organization in Abuja, Nigeria, Ms. Sara Odu, in a statement made available to journalists, said:
“The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and UNESCO are delighted to invite stakeholders to a unique online briefing session with leading experts on the theme “Reporting on glaciers in 2025: everything you need to know”
Why urging stakeholders to register for the event, she urged that registration should be completed by 15 January, adding:
“This event will support media professionals with essential knowledge and insights about climate change’s impact on glaciers and about glacial science.
According to her, the meeting will chart green-lit on the implications of melting glaciers on society, ecosystems and economies.
“40 minutes of presentations and discussion with world’s leading glacier experts (Prof. John Pomeroy, Isabelle Gärtner, Neera Pradhan, among others) will be followed by an extended Q&A session. Link to join and full programme will be sent after registration.” The Communication expert, said.
