The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) through its scientists and meteorologists have alerted the public of an increased likelihood of heat wave and thermal discomfort across the country, even as it said that it continue over the next three to four days due to a rise in ambient temperatures.
The most affected areas, NiMet, said include: North-Central and Eastern States: Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, and Cross River, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The statement, it issued said: “Other vulnerable regions are outhwest and coastal areas, as well as parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Sokoto states.

“Potential Health and Productivity Impacts exposure to excessive heat may result in: Fatigue and irritability
Reduced cognitive function and motor skills decreased productivity
“Preventive Measures and Advisory
to mitigate the effects of heat stress, the following precautions are strongly recommended: Temperature Regulation: Use cooling devices such as fans and air conditioners to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.”
According to the agency, Nigerians should wear appropriate clothing: wear lightweight, breathable fabrics that allow proper air circulation.
“Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated.
“Limited Sun Exposure: Minimize time spent outdoors, especially under direct sunlight.
“Seek shaded areas and take regular breaks if working outside.
“Avoid Peak Sun hours: Refrain from prolonged exposure to the sun between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM, when temperatures are at their highest.
“Protective accessories: Wear a wide-brimmed hat or cap and sunglasses to shield the face and eyes from direct sunlight.” The agency, said.
