With overarching emphasis on digital transformation and its deployment, Africa is set to charts a resilient future with the launch of the 2024 state of the Climate in Africa Report on May 12, 2025 at UNECA compound in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

In a media advisory made available to the media across the continent, said the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), has concluded arrangement and in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the African Union Commission (AUC) and key regional and international partners, will launch the State of the Climate in Africa Report on the stated date.
The event, according to the Public Information Officer, WMO Regional Office for Africa (RAF), Dr. Kosmos Akande-Alasoka, added that the auspicious event will allow for virtual participation.
The report according to him, is the 6th in the series as a flagship product that provides authoritative, science-based updates on climate trends, extreme events, and their impacts across Africa.

He said: “It is developed through the collaborative efforts of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs), UN agencies, and scientific experts across the continent and beyond.”
This year’s report, the media is informed places a special emphasis on digital transformation as a vital tool for climate adaptation and resilience building.
“As climate impacts intensify across Africa, the report highlights the critical role of timely, accurate, and accessible weather and climate information to guide decision-making, support disaster preparedness, and enhance sustainable development efforts.” The statement added.
The hybrid launch event will feature presentations and high-level statements from notable policy makers and climate authorities in Africa, including Dr. Agnes Kijazi, Director WMO, Regional Office for Africa, who will be moderating and introductory remarks by the WMO Secretary General, Prof. Celeste Saulo and the President of Regional Association I (Africa), Mr. Fetene Teshome.
The Report on the State of the Climate in Africa, 2024: will be delivered by Dr. Ernest Afiesimama (WMO Regional Office for Africa, while Claver Gatete (Executive Secretary, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa) (tbc) takes turn on high-level statement.
Others that will be showcasing high-level statements include: Moses Vilakati, AU Commissioner for Environment, Mike Elton Mposha MP (Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Zambia – AMCOMET Vice Chair) (tbc) and the closing remarks will be done by Dr. Aderito Celso Félix Aramuge, RA I Vice President.
