With the falling prices in food items across the country especially in the last quarter of 2025 which is occasioned by plethora of factors, Dr. Rose Gidado, food security advocate who is a Director at the National Research Biotechnology and Development Agency (NRBDA), Abuja has asserted that there has been a significant surge in the adoption of GM crops across Nigeria.

Against the background of the adoption of biotechnology for Genetically Modified crops, she affirmed that as 2025 comes to a close, the agency is enmeshed and excited in celebrating the year as that of innovation, science, technology, resilience and unprecedented economic growth.
In a release made available to the media, Gidado, said despite a year marked by intense anti-GM campaigns and misinformation, the facts on the ground tell a different story.

She said: “This year, we witnessed a significant surge in the adoption of GM crops across Nigeria.
“More farmers than ever before are now harvesting the benefits of PBR Cowpea, Bt Cotton, and TELA Maize crops engineered to defy pests, resist drought leading to bumper harvest and securing livelihoods.”

According to her, this impact is a testament to our collective efforts in choosing evidence over fear, adding – We extend our deepest gratitude to our partners and stakeholders who stood tall and firm with us:
Gidado, said: “Our Farmers: Who looked beyond the noise and chose high-yielding, pest-resistant seeds to feed the nation.
“Policy Makers and Regulators: For maintaining a rigorous, science-based framework that ensures safety and transparency.
“Academia & Researchers: For continuing to provide the data that anchor our advocacy in truth.
“Professional Bodies and Media: For helping us to dismantle myths and bring the benefits of biotechnology to the public square.”
Together, the Director asserts that scientists have proven that when science meets the soil, Nigeria wins, explaining that there has been a shift from skepticism to a future of agricultural self-reliance.
“Thank you for being part of this historic year. We look forward to scaling even greater heights in 2026.” She said.
