Why Civil Servants Embark 0n Service Week – Dr. Yemi-Esan

…Says OHCSF’s operations now driven on paperless process

As the 2023 Civil Service Week gradually winds down at the national stadium in Abuja, earlier today (Saturday) with sporting activities, the Head of Service of the Federation, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, said Civil Servants across MDAs embark on the yearly event to draw the attention of the public that civil servants are the workforce and the engine room behind the policy implementation of government.

Fielding questions from Reporters shortly after taking a penalty kick at the Moshood Abiola football pitch in Abuja, the Head of Service, said It is time for civil Servants to recognize and appreciate themselves for the good job they are doing.

According to her, the federal government workforce spent most of the times working behind the scene, stressing that they are not seen and not heard.

“So, we use this week to project civil servants and to ensure that the nation knows that there is a workforce that is behind the policy implementation of government.

On the essence of sports event today, she said, you know that for civil servants to be able to perform optimally and to be productive they must be healthy and so the aerobics and the sports activities of today is to encourage civil servants to participate frequently in sporting activities because a healthy mind must live in a healthy body.

Meanwhile, in another development still in celebration of the week, Yemi-Esan, expressed confidence in the Service as it adopts paperless operations, stressing that this is a pointer to the evolving digital revolution taking shape for greater efficiency, in its day-to-day workflow. 

According to her, ‘’for the first time in the history of Nigeria, the OHCSF no longer works with paper, resulting into remarkable time and cost savings.” 

Apart from digitalisation, the groundwork for the implementation of Performance Management System (PMS) are going on, in earnest, signaling the phasing out of the old APER system of assessment.

PMS, a globally accepted reviewing and rating mechanism, is more effective and objective and capable of improving workers’ and organisational performance, when fully deployer 

These were disclosed by the Head of the Service Civil of the Federation, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Dr. Nasir Sani Gwarzo, during a Special Juma’ah Prayer held at the National Mosque, Abuja, as part of activities marking the 2023 Civil Service Week.

Gwarzo, stated that the just launched revised Public Service Rules (PSRs) is more practicable and is going to strengthen the system, enhance performance, as well as foster growth, adding that the Service is witnessing tremendous improvement in the initiation and implementation of policies, plans and reforms under its present leadership.

The Permanent Secretary, joined by his colleagues from the Federal Ministry of Environment, Alh. Ibrahim Yusufu, Special Duties Office (SDO)-OHCSF, Engr. Faruk Yusuf Yabo and Service Welfare Office (SWO)-OHCSF, Alhaji Mahmud Adam Kambari, enjoined the Nigerian public, especially, the Muslim Ummah to continue to pray for the progress of the Nigerian Civil Service in guaranteeing the peace, stability and national development of the country.

Gwarzo, also reiterated the efforts of the Head of Service at ensuring that adequate provision for palliatives is given to Federal Civil Servants, as safety nets, in view of the recent removal of subsidy on petroleum.

 The Deputy Chief Iman of the National Mosque, Sheikh Ahmad Onilewura, prayed that Allah continues to preserve, support and protect the Service in the delivery of its mandates.
