The President, Biotechnology Society of Nigeria (BSN) Prof. Sylvia Uzochukwu, has reiterated the Society’s overarching pursuit in promoting and application of modern Biotechnology to develop Nigeria’s manpower through training, workshops and conferences.
The President made the disclosure during a courtesy call to the Director General/CEOs of both the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), Dr. Agnes Asagbra and the DG, National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), Prof. Mustapha Abdullahi, in Abuja.
While calling for sustained partnership especially with the newly constituted EXCOs, she added that BSN consists of scientists in life sciences and related fields interested in modern biotechnology.
She said: The mandate of BSN is to promote the application of modern Biotechnology in Nigeria, to develop manpower required in the field of modern Biotechnology through training, workshops and conferences.
“To ensure effective advocacy and awareness of the public through enlightenment programs on issues related to modern Biotechnology, to assist in policy development on issues related to modern Biotechnology.
“Champion the adoption of modern Biotechnology applications for food security, biosecurity, biosafety, quality health care and a safe environment.”
According to her, any reference to biotechnology by BSN, refers to modern biotechnology, the core of which is in-vitro manipulation of the nucleic acids DNA and RNA, the molecules of life.
She commended the agency on its efforts at ensuring proper regulation of modern Biotechnology and its products in Nigeria by building on the solid foundation of the previous administration.
“We rejoice with you on the recent deregulation of TELA maize, and its subsequent commercial release in Nigeria.
“BSN is happy also to note the approvals for on-going Confined Field Trials for Genetically Modified Crops (GMOs), as well as your efforts to warn superstore operators against stocking unapproved GMO products.
“The Society has had a close relationship with NBMA, having participated in most of the steps that led to the eventual creation of the agency.
“BSN members have served and continued to serve in NBMA adhoc committees for the regulation of biotechnology and its products in the country. It is our hope that this healthy relationship between the developers and the regulators will continue to be allowed to thrive under the present dispensation.” She said.
Also speaking at the office of the DG of NABDA, she added that both organisations have had a long standing relationship, in that it was BSN members who lobbied for, and midwifed the creation of NABDA, from the Biotechnology Desk of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI).
BSN and NABDA have remained partners in progress ever since. We hope the DG will sustain this relationship, she added.
Uzochukwu, said: “We commend you on the many progressive steps you have taken so far to reposition the agency to contribute to food security, quality health care and a sustainable environment through modern biotechnology.
“We have noted with delight for instance, his new strategies for the Bioresource Centres all over the country, the initiative to launch a learned journal for the agency, the agency plans to hold a first International Biotechnology conference, with calls for research proposals scientists and to be funded by NABDA.”
She advocated that the call for research proposals will soon be open to BSN members too, to compliment the efforts of TETFUND.
In his remark, admitted that the BSN presence at NABDA Headquarters is a testament to the importance of collaboration and partnership in advancing the field of biotechnology in Nigeria, adding that the BSN has been at the forefront of promoting excellence and innovation in biotechnology research and application.
“Your dedication to the advancement of biotechnology has not only contributed significantly to scientific knowledge but has also played a pivotal role in addressing various challenges facing our society today.
I am pleased to acknowledge the admirable work and achievements of the Biotechnology Society of Nigeria. Your commitment to fostering a conducive environment for the exchange of ideas, research findings, and technological innovations has undoubtedly propelled the growth of biotechnology in our country.
He said: “Today, I am delighted to share with you some of the notable achievements that NABDA has accomplished in recent years. One of the significant milestones was the successful passage and signing of the NABDA Act.
“This legislation has not only strengthened the legal framework supporting biotechnology in Nigeria but has also empowered NABDA to play a more pivotal role in guiding the nation towards the forefront of biotechnological advancements.
“Moreover, I am pleased to announce the ongoing state-of-the-art building for our central laboratory. This facility, when completed, will be equipped with cutting-edge technologies and infrastructure, providing our scientists with the tools they need to conduct groundbreaking research.”
In her contribution, the DG of NBMA, Dr. Agnes Asagbra, said she was excited to host members of the Society, adding: “It is indeed a pleasure to host the esteemed National Executive Council Members of the Biotechnology Society of Nigeria on this courtesy visit. Your presence here signifies the shared commitment we have towards the advancement of biotechnology in our nation.”
She acknowledged that the field of biotechnology has become an indispensable tool in addressing the myriad challenges facing our world today, ranging from food security and healthcare to environmental sustainability.
Asagbra, said: “The Biotechnology Society of Nigeria has been at the forefront of fostering scientific advancements and innovation in biotechnology within our nation. Your dedication to promoting the responsible and ethical use of biotechnology aligns seamlessly with the mission and vision of the NBMA.
“Collaboration is the cornerstone of progress, and today, as we stand united, we recognize the immense potential that lies in the synergy between the Biotechnology Society of Nigeria and the National Biosafety Management Agency. Together, we can propel our nation to new heights in scientific research, technological innovation, and sustainable development.
