FG to Telcos: Uphold Best Business Practices

…Toriola: MTN ready to play by the rules to advance Nigeria’s digital economy

The Federal Government on Tuesday urged investors especially players in the telecommunications space to comply with guidelines and uphold best business practices in the conduct of their operations and activities in the country.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Ibrahim Pantami made the disclosure while welcoming the in-coming Managing Director designate of MTN Nigeria Mr. Karl Toriola, who was accompanied by its Chairman, Mr. Ernest Ndukwe in his office in Abuja.

Pantami, however expressed the determination of the government to create an enabling environment for investments and businesses to thrive through its policy interventions.

He urged him (Toriola) to abide by the infallible slogan: ‘The customer is king’ as this was paramount to the success of any business venture globally and as pivotal key to business growth.

The priority of this government, Pantami, said is the security and welfare of Nigerians, adding that government is committed to making the economy business-friendly for investors: We will always put the satisfaction of our citizens as priority, he added.

The Minister noted that the telecoms sector is very key to Nigeria’s economic development adding that that is why inspite of the challenges, the country is on the path of trajectory.

He said: “Government cannot therefore tolerate any decisions or practices that will question the integrity of the sector.”

Pantami, commended the MTN group for giving due considerations to indigenous manpower which has led to the emergence of a second Nigerian to head the team while also applauding and encouraging its commitment to its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) through the MTNFoundation.

In his response, the In-coming MD, while eulogising the sterling leadership qualities of Pantami in championing and driving the digital economy agenda, assured the federal government that “we will key into any government policies and initiatives and are willing and open to any collaborations and partnerships that will further advance the digital economy cause.
