Food Security: FG Set to Release, Commercialise GM Tela Maize in 2024

The Federal Government through the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) and the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Zaria have disclosed that plans are in top gear for the release/commercialisation of Genetically Modified (GM) Tela Maize into Nigerian market in 2024, even as they acknowledged that the HT Soya bean will follow thereafter, NEWS-EXTRA.COM has authoritatively confirmed.

Addressing a cross section of stakeholders recently at the Federal University of Technology, Oye, in Ekiti State, South-west Nigeria, at a Food Security Workshop, the DG/CEO of NABDA, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, admitted that Nigeria’s PBR Cowpea which is the world’s first Genetically Modified PBR Cowpea, is revolutionizing the nation’s food production.

Stakeholders at the workshop expressed optimism that the development will address Africa’s food security dilemma.

The Mustapha reiterated that government through NABDA and its stakeholders will not relent in its efforts to continually train farmers and other stakeholders on the adoption of this cutting-edge technology.

In response to enquiries by this Reporter on the release of TELA Maize and HT Soya bean, a top official at the agency acknowledge that the release of the GM Maize will be next year (2024) while the HT Soya may probably take 2 more years obviously because of the painstaking research layers that are involved before the release and commercialization of the product.

While also addressing Editors of media houses across the country on the need to correct misleading and mis-conception views on GM crops, he said there are testimonies from farmers across the country benefiting from products of modern biotechnology in the country such as the PBR Cowpea which is helping farmers overcome the devastating impacts of Marcuca Vitrata.

According to the DG, this disease has the potential to causes 80% destruction on the farmers’ field, adding, “Today, our farmers are applying only 2 insecticide sprays as against 10 sprays previously as a result of planting the PBR Cowpea.

“Our farmers are also planting Bt. Cotton, another innovative product from modern biotechnology that is changing the game in cotton farming and the hope of the textile industry revival is on course.”

While further impressing it on the Editors and Science Reporters to ensure objective and developmental reportage, he said: “Biotechnology, as we all know, is a transformative force that holds immense potential to address some of the most pressing challenges facing our nation and the world at large.

“From healthcare to agriculture, energy to environment, biotechnology offers solutions that can significantly impact the well-being of our citizens and the sustainability of our resources.

“As editors, you play a pivotal role in shaping public opinion and disseminating information. The power of media in shaping narratives and public perception cannot be overstated. Hence, your role in communicating agricultural biotechnology to the masses is crucial for fostering understanding, dialogue, and informed decision-making.

“First and foremost, I urge you to strive for accuracy and credibility in your reporting. Agricultural biotechnology is a complex field, and presenting accurate information is paramount to ensure that the public receives reliable and trustworthy knowledge.

“Fact-checking and verification of sources are essential practices to uphold the integrity of the information you deliver.

“Secondly, I encourage you to bridge the gap between scientific language and the layperson’s understanding. Agricultural biotechnology can sometimes be laden with technical jargons that may be difficult for the public to grasp.

“It is your responsibility to translate these scientific concepts into accessible language, enabling everyone to comprehend and appreciate the significance of biotechnological advancements.

“Thirdly, while exploring the benefits of agricultural biotechnology, you should also be mindful of addressing potential risks and ethical considerations.

“As editors, you have the responsibility to provide a balanced view, incorporating diverse perspectives on biotechnology-related issues. Facilitating public discourse on the ethical implications and societal impact of biotechnology will help shape policies that prioritize safety, equity, and sustainability.

“Moreover, I encourage you to showcase success stories and examples of agricultural biotechnology applications, highlighting real-life examples of how biotechnology has positively influenced agriculture which can inspire the public and demonstrate the tangible benefits of this innovation.

In a remark, the Managing Editor, Northern Operations of the Nation Newspaper, Mr. Yusuf Alli, said it is high time that the country embraced biotechnology to improve its food production.

He charged the Editors to educate the masses, farmers and policy makers on the importance of Biotechnology at fighting food insecurity.

Alli, said: “Our aging farming population can bridge the age gap with Biotechnology. My appeal to Nigerians is that Biotechnology products are safe. I’m happy that I came for this workshop, my perception about GMO has changed.”

In his remark, the Editor of AfricaSTI, Mr. Diran Onifade, said Nigerians need to start paying attention GMOs in the country, adding that the media should shed light on GMOs since they are the gate keepers. He tasked the Editors on the need to sensitise the public by feeding them with the right information.
